EYFS HOME LEARNING WEEK 5

Please note: This is not compulsory but the following ideas will help support your child’s learning at home during this difficult time.

The main part of these activities should take no longer than 5-10 minutes.  Working little and often is key for this age group.

 

Friday 22nd  May

 

Reading

Writing

(5 minutes)

NURSERY

Drawing and mark making with a variety of writing tools – pens, pencils, paintbrushes etc.

Mark making outside with sticks in mud, sand, etc.

RECEPTION

Sentence writing

Talk about the life cycle of a caterpillar.  Think of a sentence or caption to explain one of the stages eg An egg on a leaf.   Sound out your words and write the corresponding letters.  Remember to leave finger spaces after each word!

If your child finds this tricky, get them to hear the initial and final letters in the words and write the corresponding letters.

Extension:

Challenge your child to write 2-3 sentences? 

Maths

(5 minutes)

NURSERY AND RECEPTION

Pattern

Collect objects in the garden – stones, sticks, leaves etc.  Make a pattern using the pieces.  Can you make a symmetrical pattern?

Extension:

Can you see any symmetrical patterns inside or in the garden?

NURSERY

Mark making with cotton buds and paint.  Draw a picture or pattern.

RECEPTION

Practise writing single letter sounds, digraphs and trigraphsUsing the flashcards (in the home learning pack) call out the sound and your child writes the corresponding letters – if your child is finding this difficult, concentrate on 1-2 sounds at a time and alternate to see if they can remember the corresponding letters

Extension: Get your child to write words containing the digraphs and trigraphs.  For example,  book, owl, etc.

Maths

(5 minutes)

NURSERY AND RECEPTION

Pattern

Look for patterns around your house and garden.  Talk about the patterns.  Can your child see any repeating patterns.

Look at pictures of butterflies.  Talk about the symmetrical patterns on their wings.

Extension:

Look outside for butterflies – can you identify any of them?

 Changes

Physical Development

Butterfly paintings.  Fold a piece of paper in half.  Get children to paint one side of the paper with patterns.  Fold the paper and press.  Open up to show the symmetrical pattern.

When dry, cut out in a shape of a butterfly.

Why not make a butterfly kite by adding string?

NURSERY

Drawing or colouring using pens, paints or pencils.

RECEPTION

With post-it notes, make labels for objects around your house – sounding out the words and writing the corresponding letters. Guidance on pronounciation of the sounds can be found on ‘Oxford Owl’ or google ‘Jolly Phonics’.

Extension: Can you cut and stick the letters?  Can you choose 2-3 of the words and put them in a sentence?

Maths

(5 minutes)

NURSERY

Make towers with lego – who can build the tallest?  Count the pieces, touching each piece, to see how many you used.

RECEPTION

1 more or 1 less

You will need Lego or duplo.  Make cards with 1 less and 1 more written on them.

With the Lego start with 10 pieces each to make a tower.  Take turns to turn over a card.  If it says 1 less you take off a piece of lego, one more you add on a piece of lego.  The person who ends up with no pieces is the winner. 

 

Extension:

Change the cards to 2 more, 2 less etc.

NURSERY

Put a little flour in a baking tray and move around so it covers the bottom.  Tip the excess away.  Using fingers or sticks, draw pictures and make marks in the tray.

RECEPTION

Tricky words

Practise writing all the phase 2 and 3 tricky words

Please check your child is using the correct letter formation – practise any letters incorrectly formed

 

Extension:

Can you write the words without looking at them?

Maths

(5 minutes)

NURSERY

Using a collection of objects eg buttons, coins, pens and pencils etc.  Sort the objects into colours, size or shape.

RECEPTION

1 more

Using the picture cards (in the home learning pack) lay them out on the floor.  Choose 1 picture card and your child has to find the picture card which shows one more picture than that one.  Take turns until all cards have been used.

 

Extension:

Repeat the activity but find one less

Maths

(5 minutes)

Nursery

Play a counting on board game eg snakes and ladders.

Reception

1 more

Make a number board with numbers 2-7 on.  Take turns to throw a dice – each time add 1 more to make a number and cover that number on your board.  First to cover all the numbers wins.

 

Extension

With sticky labels cover the dice numbers with bigger numbers and repeat the activity
